A Brief History of Mackenzie

In 1793 Alexander Mackenzie the famous explorer camped near the present town of Mackenzie. It is the only town in Canada that bears the name of the explorer. Mackenzie is 185 km North West of Prince George and 963 km North of Vancouver. In the Mid 1960s Mackenzie was carved out of the wilderness. Pulp and Paper and Sawmills are the main engines of the town's economy.
Mackenzie lies at the south end of Williston Lake, The largest man-made reservoir in North America. The lake was formed as a result of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam. The town has miles of hiking trails and great fishing in the summer. There is great scenery with cross country skiing and snowmobiling from your back door in the winter. There is also a great ski hill in the center of town.
